Creating A Personalized Signature To Use In Outlook Express

Learning To Add Your Personal Signature To Your E-mail Using Outlook Express

So you want to learn how to create a personalized signature to your outgoing e-mail using Outlook Express?
This page will show you what you need to do to accomplish this!

First of all, let me begin by saying OE supports a couple of types of signatures, there are plain text signatures, and there are HTML signatures. Because your settings in OE need to be set up as HTML to use Fluttrby Designs © Ready To Mail Stationery, we'll focus on HTML signatures here.Through the use of HTML you can add images & even sound to your signature with the use of some simple coding that I'll share with you. You can also add links to your e-mail or web pages too! So this makes the HTML signature the most desirable method to use. Depending on what type of layout you'd like to use for a signature will determine which HTML code your going to want to use, I have listed 4 codes below. All are changeable to suit your needs, but I can only offer support in using the ones posted here as the spectrum just gets too broad.

Make sure your Outlook Express is set up properly before you begin to add signatures, click here to set up your OE!

· Signature Type 1 - 1 clickable image and text of your choice.
· Over & Under Style OR Side by Side Style

This page covers Signature Type 1
(plans to add Signatures with sounds are next when time permits me to prepare it)

To begin let's make a folder to store your signatures in, this folder can be placed anywhere on your HardDrive, but you might want to keep it somewhere handy, so my suggestion would be go to My Documents and right click anywhere in that window and select NEW / FOLDER this will present you with a New Folder, you need to right click on the folder and select Rename this will highlight the New Folder so you can type in your folders name, call it OE Signatures. If you have a small image (keep in mind that these images add weight in Kb's to your email so try to choose ones that are less than 20 KB in size and under 200 px in dimension) you'd like to use with your signature you can drag it into this folder too so as to keep these these components all together or perhaps you already have a folder full of images elsewhere your going to want to use, either way you need to know the EXACT location (file path) to those images and sounds if used.
Now we're ready to write the HTML that makes it all happen.

Make sure WordWrap is ON with a checkmark!Download this file first!
(Right Click and select Save Target as.......... directing the download to your folder you just made for signatures.
Open Notepad by clicking on Start / Accessories / Notepad
Next make sure your WordWrap is checkmarked in Notepad, go up top and click on Edit and select WordWrap if there is no checkmark beside it so it looks like this.
Then Open the file in Notepad by clicking on File/Open up top
In Notepad click on File / Open and click the drop window to select All Files
and open the BlankSignatureOverUnder.html and you will see this:

The things you need to edit by highlight each section and typing in your own information
, I have highlighted here for you, just take it one color at a time :o)
Highlighted examples of what you need to edit to make this work for you!

Please NOTE - when making you modifications or changes to the code typos are crucial, you have to pay very close attention to your File Paths, spelling, spacing etc. If you neglect to add one dash or dot or misspell the file path your signature won't work correctly, remember typing is case-sensitive too!
Highlighting and copying your image Location How do you find the file path to your images or sounds you ask? It's easy, browse to the folder your image or sound is kept in on your Hard Drive with Explorer, locate your image you want to use, then right click on it and select Properties, you'll get a pop up window like the one below, when the time comes and you need to replace my Red text for your file location, this is what you'll need to copy/paste into your notepad file your creating:
Highlighting & copying your image name Repeat the last step once more to copy file name.

Both the Location and the file name are required to create the FILE PATH for the HTML to work correctly. Copy/Paste is much more reliable than trying to retype what you've read, trust me I know lol
So when you enter your entire file path it will look like the top and bottom combined all on one line like this:

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\New\MySigs\FDClownSig.gif matching of course your path on your computer, this one matches mine as highlighted above.

When your finished making all of the changes you wish to make go to File/Save AS and name your new signature file whatever you choose, storing it in your new folder as well. This will leave your original Blank HTML file intact for future use! Now lets go to your folder and click on the file so it opens in Internet Explorer and you can have a peek at what you've done!

Checking your HTML in Internet Explorer
When your satisfied your ready to add the signature to Outlook Express!
Keep in mind once you have your signature inserted into your e-mail you can still edit the font, size, color, and wording from there if you change your mind and want it to be different.
The other signature code I offer you is the Side by Side HTML this sets your text and image side by side, you can download a copy of it here and do your editing just like you did above as shown here:

As you will see there are more lines added to this one for more links and text, these can be easly deleted if you don't want to use them.

A helpful page for choosing a wide range of color codes to use can be found here. as well as many other places online, just run a search for color code chart. Also check out my tutorial for picking custom colors here.
