Instructions to complete the Clear Glass Bell

(If your coming from finishing the Snow Bell Skip #1)

1. Go to Windows / Duplicate and Save this new image as Clear Glass Bell and minimize or close your other Bell image until later to make a Snow Bell with.

2. Hide your bell layer, all handle layers turn on your black bottom layer, activate your top layer and Add a New Raster, naming it airbrush.

3. Selections / Load from Disk your Bell one more time *s* and Click on your Airbrush tool with these settings:

Airbrush settings

And draw a line similar to this:

Airbrush a line like this

Go to Effects / Blur / Gaussian Blur and apply these settings:

Gaussian Blur settings

You may or may not want to repeat this step, it's up to you the effect you want, all this is doing is adding the simulation of light to the glass dome of your bell. Then add some noise to help prevent banding.

4. Let's hide all your bell layers and the airbrush layer and make a chain to hang the clapper from. Unhide your handle so you can get a size perspective here.

5. Choosing your preset shapes tool / Ellipse / Stroke set to Pattern, select the FD_Gold Chain pattern that you placed in the Patterns folder, line size set at 5, create as vector checked. Make a tiny elliptic circle. Zoom in once so you can see it, it's just a link for the chain so it's small.

Chain Link

zoom in to easier align your links

When you have the shape and size you like convert this layer to a Raster and name it chainlink. Move it into position with your mover to directly below your handle and add a slight drop shadow, settings of: 0 V | 0 H | Opacity 100 | Blur 1.2 . Dragging this layer on the palette to below the handle layers and duplicate the link and move it below your first link and so on until your chain is the desired length, I used 9 links on mine. Use your snowscene picture as a guide as to how long to make the chain, you don't want it too long because you need to see a glimpse of the clapper nor do you want it too short or it won't look right. *g* When your happy with it, hide all layers except the chainlink layers and merge all visible and rename the layer chain.

6. Now for the clapper, the little piece inside that makes the nice ringing sound when it hits the side of the bell :o) Get your preset shape tool with these settings:

Pentegon settings

And draw a small pentagon similar to this one:
(if you don't have the pentagon you can load the FD_Clapper selection now and flood fill it white, then skip to #7)

While holding down Shift move your 2 bottom corners inward one at a time so the meet to form a point then convert this layer to a Raster renaming it clapper and go Image / Flip and move it into position below your chain. Layer position should be just above your chain layer.

7. Selections / Select All / Float / Defloat and apply Super Blade Pro / Soclear to the clapper, click ok and Colorize this layer the same as your handle if desired.

8. While still selected Add a New raster and name it clapper cutout and apply a cutout effect with these settings:

Cutout settings for Clapper

9. Unhide all the bell shadow and cutout layers. Leave the Bell layer hidden, and have a look. From here you need to decide which cutout and drop shadow layers you like the look of.

10. Ok time to finish this bell up, having decided on what layers to keep for the bell itself, hide all the other layers and merge all visible, rename this layer Bell.

11. Because we can see through this bell, it needs some definition on the back side of it, so to do this go to your Preset Shapes and select the ellipse line size 5 yes Create as Vector, stroke set to black and draw a shape to fit the width of the bottom of the bell, then adjust the height to a reasonable distance. Once satisfied convert this layer to a raster, rename the layer glassbottombackline and go to Effects / Blur / Blur then again Effects / Blur / Soften. Drag this layer under your Bell layer. You'll probably want to lower the Opacity on this layer to make it blend with the shadows of the bell. On some of my bells I had to use gray rather than black.

Here's a checkpoint of my layer order and Opacity settings:

As you can see by my settings you will want to adjust the Opacity settings on some layers to obtain certain looks so play around and have fun.......
see what you come up with.

12. Click on your bottom black layer and either flood fill it white or add a new raster and fill it white so you have a good backdrop to do your cleanup and softening against.

13. Now the front of that back line you drew needs to be erased as it makes the front of the bell too dense. So grab your Eraser and erase the whole front of the line being careful not to erase past the sides.

Retouch Settings

Then switch to your Retouch tool and soften the back of the line some, switch to your bell layer and soften the bottom edge of your bell while your here to smooth out the jaggies you may have. Pay close attention to the areas marked below:

Retouch the edges to smooth

14. If you haven't done it in a while, now is a good time to SAVE your work! Ok let's move up to the handle. Time to make a choice, do you want a porcelain handle or a glass handle? If you want a glass one you need to hide the Handle layer that you have applied Super Blade Pro to, if not leave it and merge all visible, Selections / Select All / Float / Defloat / Selections / Modify / Contract by 1 / Modify / Feather by 2 / Selections / Invert and hit your delete key twice is usually plenty on the handle because it's thin, too many deletes and there goes the handle lol If you want a glass handle then hide the Blade Pro layer. Check shadow layers of your handle for jaggies, I think they shouldn't need much softening if any.

At this point you can add a new layer for a hanger if you'd like to make a hanging bell, I used the Rope tube supplied by Jasc to make one on some of my bells.

Rope Tube settings
The rope colorizes well too!

15. Hide all layers you don't want in the Glass bell, check to be sure the layers are all lined up properly and merge all visible. I have found these glass bells also colorize quite well when your finished!

Final Layer Checkpoint before Merging All Visible

16. Your finished all except adding a perspective shadow, so you may want to tube this image to preserve it without a shadow now. Then if you have Eye Candy 3.01 apply the following setting: (Apply these after you have merged all visible, with your black layer hidden. Use the layers to your advantage! I duplicated my Bell layer and then hid one, merged a bell with a long handle, then hid it, unhid the other bell and merged it to a rope hanger and Viola! 2 bells, one palette, copy paste either one as a new image and tube or save.)

Nice Eye Candy Perspective Shadow to Add to Glass Bells

Keep an eye out to see what the shadow does at the base of your bell or it will look like it's floating way to high:o)
