Ruffled Lace Valentine Tutorial

»---(¯`°´¯)---»

For Paint Shop Pro 6, 7, 8 & 9

Page 1

Welcome! I have been thinking it's time I ought to try my hand at writing a tutorial to share with others, and try to give back a little of what I have learned since I began using Paint Shop Pro! I was dabbling one evening and stumbled on an effect that I find very exciting, it's creating Ruffles! Since I have never seen a tutorial on this subject, I thought it would be fun to share the steps I took to achieve this effect! :o)

Valentines is a perfect time to share this technique with you, so let's get started!

This tutorial has been written using PSP version 7 but I'm sure it's adaptable to version 6 as well.
This tutorial also assumes you have a good working knowledge of PSP.

For this tutorial you will need the following:

1. Paint Shop Pro (if you don't have it you may download an evaluation copy here)
2. My Ruffled Lace Materials Package (which includes 1 strip of lace tubed, 1 Gold Heart, and 1 White wire frame Bow) PSP 7 users Right click here and select 'Save Target As' to download this zipped package. PSP 6 users Right Click Here for compatible files.
3. The Jama 3D Plugin (it's free) for your PSP, if you don't have it you can download it here it comes bundled with 8 other fun plugins.

Once you have the Jama 3D installed into your plug-ins folder and you have your Materials Zip file downloaded, unzip the file and open all images in your PSP and we'll begin.

Open a New Image with the following settings:
150 wide X 500 high / Resolution set at 100 / Transparent Background / 16.7 million colors (24 bit)
Add a New Raster Layer and flood fill it with any color you choose, this will only serve as a backdrop so you can see the lace easier since it's so light. Add another new layer to place your strip of lace on.

Butterfly Lace strip with length doubled

With your Butterfly lace strip tube either open in PSP or installed in your tube folder you need to copy/paste it (or apply the tube, if you installed it) onto your New Image window, and move it to the top & center of this window. Then duplicate this layer and go to Image up top and select Flip, and arrange this layer to meet up with the ends of your first layer, now your lace is twice as long, you may want to zoom in so you can match the ends exactly.

Now you should have something that looks like this on the left. Once ends are matched up you need to hide your backdrop layer and with a lace layer active, go up top to Layers/merge all visible.

Jama 3D plugin settings for ruffling lace
There have been several updates to the Jama 3D plugin.... the settings shown here are for the latest version v1.70 which I have updated as of Feb. 6, 2006

Next we're going to make the lace ruffle. Working with your Lace layer active, go to Effects/ PlugIn Filters/Redfield/Jama 3D and use the settings shown here.

Cool huh?! :o) While your here with Jama open you might want to save these settings, if you drop the window by clicking on the small arrow you'll see at the bottom of the drop list SAVE USER PRESET, select it and a small box will pop up for you to Name this setting, then it's saved for you to use again another time.

Ruffled Lace with deformation tool applied to even up the ends.

Ok you have your lace ruffled you ought to save this image as .psp now, then continue. We need to be sure the very ends of the lace are square (by this I mean level and even, I use the grid to help me judge this), when you applied Jama it set them off just a bit so select your deformation tool and hold down your shift key then nudge the corners so they are squared up top and bottom (otherwise you'll have a hard time aligning the lace around the hear). When you have it all squared up hit apply/ then sharpen.

Save your image again now. Next we need to resize the lace for use on the heart project, I used Image Resize, 50 %. Once again sharpen.

An important note here, I wish to extend my Thanks to 'Linda' for allowing me to share this Lace tube with you for the purpose of this tutorial, she tells me this piece is handmade, over 20 yrs old and quite expensive in it's real life form, she scanned it and tubed it for people like us to enjoy.
Thank You so much Linda!!
You can visit Linda's Gallery and browse through her collection for more lace selections, there's some nice ones there! :o)

The bow provided in your materials package was freely distributed thru the Annexcafe.psp.tubes newsgroup as well as FlyByNightsGraphics Group and I'd like to Thank them as well, it's a beautiful bow!
